APCA chefs and students celebrating with the Malaysian flag at a pastry competition

Careers after a professional pastry course

A professional pastry qualification opens more doors than most people expect. Here are the roles APCA’s pastry graduates move into, where they work, and how APCA helps students take the first step.

The roles

  • Commis and demi chef — the entry and next rungs in a professional pastry kitchen, where you build speed, consistency and technique under a pastry chef.
  • Pastry chef — runs a pastry section or kitchen: creating menus, managing production and leading a team.
  • Artisan baker — specialises in breads, sourdough and viennoiserie.
  • Chocolatier — works with chocolate as a craft: tempering, bonbons, confections and showpieces.
  • Patisserie owner — runs their own patisserie, café, bakery or home brand.
  • Food stylist, dessert consultant and product developer — roles that use pastry expertise in photography and media, menu development for restaurants, or developing products for food companies.

Where pastry chefs work

APCA’s graduates work in 5-star hotels, restaurants, patisseries and bakeries. At APCA Malaysia, the academy notes that chefs from 5-star hotels, renowned restaurants and top bakeries train with APCA and actively hire its graduates — and APCA alumni are found in leading hospitality brands in major cities and international destinations.

How APCA supports the first step

  • Internships: APCA India’s pastry diploma includes internships with branded hotels and leading bakery chains, with job-placement assistance.
  • Early introductions: at APCA Malaysia, students’ résumés are shared with employers six weeks before graduation, and interviews and skill tests are arranged before the course ends.
  • Running your own business: towards the end of the diploma, APCA Malaysia guides students on entrepreneurship, costing and setting up their own bakery or restaurant.
  • International experience: APCA Malaysia’s Advanced Diploma graduates can take optional paid internships of six to eleven months in countries including France, Italy, Spain and Australia.

Which of these will be available to students in Chandigarh will be confirmed with the course line-up.
